Which kitchen joints we reseal

  • Worktop to wall: the long joint along the back, where splashes run down.
  • Upstand or splashback to worktop: water sits along this joint after every wipe-down.
  • Around the sink: inset and undermount sinks rely on sealant between the rim and the worktop.
  • Worktop joints and ends: where two lengths meet, and at exposed edges.
  • Around the hob: where needed and where a suitable product can be used.

Why kitchen sealant matters

Most worktops have a chipboard or timber core. Once water gets past the sealant it soaks into the edge, and the worktop swells and lifts. That damage can’t be reversed, so the worktop has to be repaired or replaced. A failed bead is cheap to fix by comparison, which is why it’s worth resealing as soon as you see gaps, shrinkage or mould.

A real kitchen reseal: Harper Drive, Maidenbower

At a kitchen in Harper Drive, Maidenbower, Crawley, the sealant was around 30 years old. It had shrunk away from the wall and water had been getting behind the worktop for a while. We stripped the worktop joint, upstand and sink surround, resealed with a colour-matched sanitary silicone and used a food-safe product beside the sink. The work was done the same day. The customer said: “Came out the next day, sorted it properly. Really tidy job.”

How we do it

  1. All the old sealant is cut out, including any layers underneath.
  2. The joints are cleaned, treated for mould and dried.
  3. We check the worktop is fixed firmly. A worktop that moves will tear any sealant.
  4. New sealant is chosen for each joint: anti-fungal sanitary silicone along worktops and upstands, and a food-safe product beside the sink where it’s needed, colour-matched to your worktop where possible.
  5. The beads are tooled neatly and we tell you how long to leave them before use.

Kitchen and bathroom together

Many customers have the kitchen and bathroom done on the same visit. Tell us everything that needs doing when you ask for a quote. Our guide to sealing kitchen worktops and sinks has more detail, and coloured sealant and colour matching explains how we match sealant to worktops.

What it costs

We don’t publish set prices. It depends on the length of the joints, how much old sealant has to come out and whether there’s mould or damage. Call or email with a few details (photos help) and we’ll give you a clear quote before any work starts.

Kitchen resealing: common questions

Can you colour-match sealant to my worktop?

Where possible, yes. Tell us the worktop colour and finish when you ask for a quote.

Is the sealant by the sink food-safe?

We use a food-safe product beside the sink where it’s needed.

My worktop edge has swollen. Will resealing fix it?

Resealing stops more water getting in, but it can’t reverse swelling. A badly swollen worktop needs repairing or replacing first.

How long before I can use the kitchen?

We’ll tell you the cure time for the product we used before we leave. Keep water off the new joints until then.

Is kitchen resealing guaranteed?

Yes. Every job comes with our one-year guarantee.
