Bathroom resealing in Reading: how it works
It is not only bathrooms. Worktop upstands, sink edges and splashback joints all take splashes every day, and water that gets into the back edge of a worktop can swell the board. Kitchen joints get a sealant suited to kitchens, colour-matched where it shows. We work on baths, sinks & splashbacks and wet rooms, and people most often call us about failed sealant on the screen profile and cracked, shrunken or lifting silicone.
We work through the job in order: protect, prepare, seal, tidy. For most jobs that takes a morning or an afternoon for most single baths and showers and we leave things clean and tidy.
- We cover the area around the joints we are working on.
- We cut away the old sealant and clean off what’s left.
- Mould is treated, then the joint is left to dry thoroughly.
- Baths are filled first, then anti-fungal sanitary silicone is applied in a colour to suit.
- The joint is finished neatly and we explain when it can get wet.

Bathroom resealing across Reading: local notes
In Reading, bathroom resealing takes in flats, houses, rentals and businesses, from Caversham, Norcot and West Reading to the quieter places in between. Wherever the job is, all the old material comes out before anything new goes in.
London and the South East have homes from every era, from period terraces to post-war new towns and new estates. Each needs the right sealant for its age and materials.
Caversham: Homes close to Grace Church include some older properties, and walls and floors in older homes can move, and sealant and grout show it first. If you let a flat or house near Reading station, fresh sealant around the bath, shower and sink between tenancies helps a property present well and keeps leaks at bay.
DIY sealant or a professional job?
A careful DIYer can reseal a simple joint, such as a straightforward joint indoors. The common mistakes are sealing over old sealant, sealing a damp joint and using far too much.
If you are set on DIY, put the effort into preparation: take out all the old sealant, make sure the joint is clean and dry, and give it the full cure time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still put it right.
What happens if it’s left?
The difference in a professional reseal is mostly what you do not see: removing all the old sealant, degreasing the joint, treating mould and drying it properly. Skip those steps and even the best silicone fails early.
Questions to ask before you book
- How much experience the applicator has
- Which colour the sealant will be
- What the cure time is
- Whether VAT is included
Honest limits
New sealant cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before work begins. Sealant will not put right:
- Tiles that have come away from the wall
- Failed grout lines across the wall
- Cracks in the tray itself rather than the joint
Keeping the joints in good condition
Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:
- Wipe the sealant dry after showering
- Keep bottles off the sealant line
- Never pick at the silicone with a blade
- Give the silicone its full cure time
Clean the silicone with care: a mild bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth is enough. Scourers and blades can nick the surface, because a damaged bead gives mould a foothold.
Worktop joints fail quietly. Water gets behind the upstand and into the edge of a laminate worktop, and the board underneath can swell. A reseal in time can save the worktop.
Different surfaces, different methods
Baths
Acrylic baths give a little under load, while steel and cast iron baths move less but still settle when full. Loading the bath with water before sealing allows for it.
Kitchen worktops & upstands
Kitchen joints need more degreasing than bathroom ones, since cooking leaves a film that stops silicone sticking. Proper degreasing is what helps the new joint last.
Reading: your questions answered
How long does a bath or shower reseal take?
That depends on the number of joints and the state of the old sealant. Allow a couple of hours for a typical bath or shower.
Can you reseal around my kitchen sink and worktop?
Yes. The old sealant is cut out and the joint degreased, because cooking grease stops silicone sticking, then we reseal in a colour to suit.
How long does the new silicone need before I use the shower?
After around 24 hours in most cases. We’ll tell you the cure time for the product we used.
Are you ARBOMaster approved?
Yes. ARBOMaster is the approved applicator scheme for Arbo sealants, and we’re part of it.
Can you work on commercial sites?
Yes, regularly. We can plan bigger jobs in stages to suit the site.
Will you leave a mess?
Tidy work is part of the job. We protect what’s around the joints, and the area is left clean when we finish.
Can new silicone go straight over the old?
No. New silicone will not bond to old silicone, so it lifts and traps water and mould underneath. All the old sealant comes out first.
